. but they seem to be quite optimistic they're moving towards something and a big endorsement, this earlier today from the top negotiator democrat in the senate, harry reid. a lot of moving parts. trying to get a hold on t. and talk about republicans. do we know where they stand on the approval of this deal? >> reporter: yeah. that is a big question, because the house republicans, you saw just how hard it was for the house republican leadership to get their own bill through the house, and to get their own members onboard for this deal. talking about a compromise, you can only guess that might be even a tougher sale, possibly. we haven't heard yet from house speaker john boehner or house leadership and where they stand on things. we know, though, however, we are told by a top senate republican leadership aide that they're not there yet and still working. so it seems like they're still working on the deal. clearly, not at a place harry reid is at this point and that's a big question of where are republicans going to stand on this? are they going to endorse it and what their issues are with it. don?

to look at a real potential impact in the election, and also confidence in washington to tackle the big problems. >> something that's been whispered about the last few days and getting a little more traction is this question of the 14th amendment and whether its discussion that the public debt would give the president a mechanism, if all else fails, to unilaterally go in and raise the debt ceiling. what is the word from the white house and are they getting pressure fraom within the party? >> there is pressure if need be. they are saying that the president's legal team has ruled out. but there's a lot of white house lawyers who are still involved in all of the potential end game. the reality is that nobody wants to default. they recognize what the consequences of that would be. so, i think that's still under consideration, but nobody wants to push that hard while they think there's the prospect here of a deal finally emerging. >> all right, david gregory, we'll talk to you a bit later in the broadcast. thanks for now. >> thanks, lester. >>> now time to get a check of the morning's other

of the big issues that the white house has had with the house republican plan and what's really been seen as an area that needed to be negotiated and really could be the thing that could lead to a break-through on a deal is this idea of if you're going to have a two-part increase in the debt ceiling that would take the debt ceiling through the next election, november 2012, it was really how you tied that second increase in the debt ceiling after several months. the white house senate democrats didn't like the way that the house republicans were doing it. they felt it would have led to some chaotic situation like we have seen with all of this back and forth over the debt increase and they would have seen it again around the new year and they didn't want to do it again. they are looking at that sort of seam, if you will, in the context of the framework to maybe work it out in a way that is more amendable to the white house and democrats. >> brianna keilar for us at the white house. cnn is dedicated to providing you up to the minute coverage of the debt crisis and tomorrow night, we will bri
